Phonics: Our main focus this quarter is reading words with digraphs and blends. We will continue to concentrate on memorizing sight words and word families. These words will enable your child to use them in their daily writing and recognize them in early reader books that are used in the classroom.
Reading: We will continue reading leveled readers and challenging students to improve their reading and writing skills. We will also be retelling stories with details for comprehension as well as reading informational texts and be able to retell key details that occur in sequence (the beginning, middle and end of a story), the characters and the setting of the story. We will also be discovering similarities and differences among and between two stories (comparing and contrasting). We will also work on asking and answering questions while reading or listening to a book. Writing We will continue to learn what good writers do: Use capitals, spacing, spelling sight (trick) words correctly and phonetically spelling other words. We will continue with punctuation, and correctly forming letters. This quarter we will focus on narratives, research writing and revising as well as friendly letters.
Math: We will continue working on making tens and ones, for example, 17 is 10 and 7 ones. We will also be working on building fluency in addition and subtraction through 5, and solving word problems in addition and subtraction. We will review how to measure objects and compare them according to weight, size and length. We will continue to review patterns, shapes, ten frames, and ordinal numbers. We will introduce the concept of place value, using base ten blocks count to 100, and addition and subtraction word problems.
Social Studies: We will be learning how to take care of the Earth by reducing, reusing and recycling. Students will identify the difference between a need and a want.
Science: We will learn about magnets, the plants and animals in our local environment, participate in guided investigations and observe an ant farm as well as caterpillars turning into butterflies. We will discuss natural versus man-made materials and decide if an object is living or non-living and why.
